What is Truth?

This question is often asked when seeking answers.

"What is truth?"

I asked my pastor what truth was. "What you want it to be?" I would be a hypocrite not to admit her statement is true if I was not immediately willing to change and adjust my views and behaviors. Why, because truth has parts to it- one part is what I will choose to accept as truth, from my self-knowledge base and level of understanding and secondly which reality will I submit too and obey. People do not like to be told what to do, my pastor may have suspected this from me.

There is a struggle within when one is challenged to improve or change. We honestly desire to change, but doing the change requires skills which we often lack.  Will I make this change, do I have to make this change now? Will anyone make me make this change?  Might be some answers we give ourselves. Many factors come into play and what truth are we asking about really? This is where the realistic reply "What you want it to be " rings true. Do we like to be told the truth? There are collective truths we know and adhere to such as murder is wrong versus individual truths- I don't like coffee. These two statements are not parallel because one statement holds true for the well being and safety of humanity versus disliking coffee which is a personal choice not affecting anyone. So then there exist collective truths which do make differences, a standard which does make a difference which holds absolutely true.

For example, poisoning our water supply is wrong and this is true. We all agree we do not want to be poisoned. What happens when truths are not so evident as to their outcome and result. We cannot see the future or know the outcomes of all our decisions and actions. This is where things become grey, sticky, and abstract.

Humans believe what they are prepared and able to accept, as true. As well, as from which authority. they chose to listen and adhere to it. We admit we need help, we need the church the authority on spirituality, the leadership of the church as a guide to our spiritual well being. Our spirituality is part and parcel of who we are as humans. We are both physical and spiritual in nature. 

 The airwaves too tell a story. Within these airwaves, the Spirit Wind of the universe permeates its voice and truth through the Book called the Bible. Who takes care of our spiritual but the Spiritual- The Holy Spirit. A standard that prevails since the beginning of creation. Written down and believed by billions worldwide-collectively yet not in all aspects but with variations, such as one church will proclaim one teaching and another church another vision. For example, some churches do not believe in drinking wine or serving it at Communion and some churches serve wine during Communion and do not forbid the drinking of wine. People, church leadership take stances on issues.

1 Corinthians 13:9 says " For we know in part and we prophesy in part.

So what is imperative then, 

The Greatest Gift

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels but have not love, I have become as sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy; and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. When I was a child I spoke as a child. I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now, we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three;

but the greatest of these is love.
